Every Saturday, a group of dedicated, working actors gather at the Hudson Guild Theater in Hollywood to hone and nurture their acting/performing skills. A broad range of topics are thoroughly discussed;
. de-mystifying the audition,
. how to face the demands of being an actor
. operating under pressure
. the "way in" to a character
. plus practical (and inspirational) insights into a long-term career.
At the top of The Master Class, Raphael gives a full lecture about the actor's journey, surviving in this business, overcoming the obstacles and getting the job. Some of his students warmly refer to it as "The Sermon," because his generous lecture invites you to think - think about your own journey as an artist, your own goals, issues, challenges and joys as an actor. Open discussion is encouraged, students share their opinions too, and the Master Class begins.
"Leave your actor in the car," says Raphael. "It's your humanity that people want to see."
"Understanding that YOU (the actor) are the storyline, the material, the soul of the work - I'm striving to elicit that specific experience which is unique unto you. That's where interesting work takes place."
"I don't wind you up with technique, I won't sell you a book or a religion; I offer you an actor's partnership to expand," explains Raphael.
